Did you know Owen Joyner, star of Nickelodeon's Knight Squad, recently visited Australia?

He took a break from playing Arc to check out Nickelodeon Land at Sea World on the Gold Coast, and sent an awesome shout out to K-Zoners!

Who's your fave Knight Squad character? Let us know in the comments below.

Owen also answered a few of our big questions, check out what he had to say!

KZ: What’s at the top of your list of things to do in Australia?

O: Hug a koala, see a kangaroo, and try Vegemite.

    KZ: What’s your favourite snack?

O: Cereal and chocolate chip cookies with a glass of milk.

KZ: What did you think about acting before you started?

O: I thought it was only for girls because I only knew acting through musicals. They asked me to try acting but at the time I only played baseball, but then I tried it and loved it. Acting is for everyone!

Hey K-Zoners! For those of you living in NSW, ACT, NT, SA and Tasmania, the holidays are going strong and I’m sure all of you are having an incred time! What have you done so far, and what’s next? Let me know in the comments below!

Obvs, the holidays are over now for K-Zoners in Qld, Vic and WA, but I still want to hear about all the epic activities you did in the break! Get over to the comments and share some stories with me!

If you know me, then you know I’m a major Marvel fan (hello, check out the awesome drawing of me right above this blog post!), and when I heard there was an opportunity to meet a Marvel comic artist, there was no way I was going to miss the chance!

Credit: Deidre Jones Petkovski; Dream Designs & Photography

The Microsoft Store in Sydney is holding free Marvel Create Your Own workshops each day this week (until Sunday October 14), with step-by-step tutorials from pro artists! The comic workshops will teach you tips for illustrating famous Marvel characters and allow anyone to use Surface devices to create and edit their own comic art, using Tap Tap Comics Marvel Create Your Own platform.

The Microsoft Store also holds free Minecraft Build Challenge events every Saturday and Sunday, as well as a variety of other events throughout the week like Play and MakeCode with Minecraft, FIFA 19 tournaments, Get Creative with Paint 3D workshops and much more.

Credit: Deidre Jones Petkovski; Dream Designs & Photography

I attended the Microsoft Store Marvel Create Your Own workshop today to see Marvel comic artist Patrick Brown bring Thanos to life! Patrick showed us how he moves from line drawings to sketches and inks, and shared some of his drawing techniques. After the workshop, I asked Patrick all the big questions – everything from common artist mistakes, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and using the Surface pen to create! K-Zoners, meet Patrick!

KZ: Hey Patrick! Who is your absolute favourite Marvel character to draw?

P: Definitely Spider-Man. I’ve always loved Spider-Man, even as a kid – I’m a Marvel fan at heart. I’ve always liked him because he’s so energetic and you can draw him in any pose. He’s very aerodynamic and his action poses are intense and fun to draw. As an artist, it’s always fun to come up with crazy poses.

Credit: Deidre Jones Petkovski; Dream Designs & Photography

KZ: What is your first step when drawing a character?

P: The pose. The first thing I have to figure out is whether it’s an action pose or a standing/attitude pose. It also depends on what Marvel want. They’ll usually tell me something like, ‘We want an action pose of Captain America’, but after that they are pretty free rein and that’s the only guidance I’ll need. I’ll whip up a few action shots in a sketch and get them to pick one. I find the sketching stage is probably the most important of the entire process.

KZ: Do you start with pen and paper, or a digital program?

P: These days I’m going more digital. I’ll sketch more with my Wacom and I have a lot of tablets. For example, in the Microsoft Store Marvel Create Your Own workshop, I used a Surface pen and it’s brilliant, there’s no lag and its almost exactly the same as drawing with pencil and paper. It’s also great to be able to take the screen off and move around with it.

Credit: Deidre Jones Petkovski; Dream Designs & Photography

KZ: Where do you usually like to work?

P: I have a studio and I mostly draw in there but sometimes I’ll draw on the move. Travelling to Sydney, I used my Surface to draw on the plane and pass the time, coming up with a few new sketches.

KZ: How did you first start as an artist?

P: I’ve always been into art from a very young age, always with pencil and paper up until I left college, which is when I started moving into the digital world. I was intrigued by how clean the colours can be with digital and saw a lot of potential there. The first time I ever had access to a tablet, I’d go crazy using it in any of my free time and drawing any chance I could. It changed my whole life because I was always digital after that, all digital drawing and art. It helped develop my style.

KZ: What’s the biggest mistake made by new artists?

P: Start simple! It’s always best to start simple and add from there. For example when I’m sketching and trying to come up with a pose, don’t overwhelm yourself. Sometimes it’s best to even just start with a circle for a torso and build shoulders onto that with a few more circles; keep adding until you’re happy. If you don’t like it, scrap it and start again. That’s what I’ve always done. If you don’t like it, try again and don’t give up. You learn every time you draw something and start again. The key is to keep trying. Also find what inspires you. Make sure if you like other artists, try and soak up what they do and watch how they create it. I’m a big fan of Humberto Ramos and Ryan Ottley. They both influenced me a lot and as a young artist it made me think, ‘I would love to do something like that’.

    Artwork: Patrick Brown

KZ: What types of Marvel projects do you work on?

P: Since I’ve been working for Marvel, it’s mostly been character work, separate characters that you would see on products. I haven’t done interior comics yet but I’ve done a lot of comic covers, mostly for Spider-Man. I’ve done about 20 covers by now, for Spider-Man, Thor, Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy.

KZ: As a major Spidey fan, are you excited about the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse movie?

P: Yes I am! I had the pleasure of working on that too, I did some art for it – a lot of promotional work so you might see my art on the toy packaging. I’ve seen my work on products out in the world now.

KZ: Awesome! Does that mean you knew secrets about the movie before everyone else?

P: Yes, I did. I was so excited when I first got the chance to work on it, about a year ago. When I found out I was going to be a part of some of the art for it, it was amazing.

Want to attend a Microsoft Store Marvel Create Your Own workshop? Catch a Marvel artist demonstration and workshop 10am-12pm Wednesday October 10, 2pm-4pm Thursday October 11, 10am-12pm Friday October 12, 2pm-4pm Saturday October 13 and 10am-12pm Sunday October 14.

  • Meet Adam McArthur, AKA Marco in Star vs. The Forces of Evil

    by Aideen | Sep 14, 2018

KZ:  For any K-Zoners who haven’t seen it, what makes Star vs. The Forces of Evil different to other shows?

A: I think if I was to boil it down, it’s the characters! None of them are perfect and they all have lessons to learn, but their relationships with each other and this magical journey they’re on, make them SO lovable. They are all my children :)

KZ: If you could hang out with any other character in the show, who would you choose?

A: Are we talking character or voice actor? I’ll give you both! For character I choose Star (duh!) – who wouldn’t want to go on an inter-dimensional adventure? For voice actor I choose Jon Heder, who voices Oskar. He’s the nicest guy!

KZ: Marco wears red hoodies a lot! If you had to wear the same outfit all the time like a cartoon character, what would you wear?

A: Haha I love this question! I’m so torn! Do I go comfort over style or the opposite?! Somebody help me! OK, OK… I choose a patterned short sleeve button down, some comfy jeans, and some sweet kicks. I choose comfort AND style!

KZ: Which location from the show would be the worst place to live in for a month?

A: Oh, man… the dimension with all the cats with human faces! CREEPY!

KZ: New episodes from Season 3 start airing in Australia in late September. Is there an Easter egg or special moment in the third season that you want K-Zoners to keep an eye out for?

A: All I can say is, HANG ON. You’re in for an emotional roller coaster of fun!

New episodes of Star vs. The Forces of Evil start September 29 at 8:00am on Disney XD!

  • Meet A Knowledge Keeper

    by Aideen | Aug 20, 2018
Hi K-Zoners! I hope you had a great weekend – did you read the new September issue of K-Zone? If you did, you’ll totally know what I mean when I say Raven from Teen Titans Go! vs Kylo Ren (LOL!), The Gawkleys (so wild) and learning lightsaber moves from a master! Do you love the posters this month? I have the Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion poster up on my wall, right next to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate poster.

I also got to chat to Shannon Foster, an Aboriginal Knowledge Keeper and Sydney Olympic Park Education Officer, for the September issue, and I thought I’d share a bit more of our convo here – because what’s more awesome than looking after our environment!

KZ: Hey Shannon! You guide mangrove tours at Sydney Olympic Park – what are mangroves, and why are they important parts of the ecosystem?

S: Mangroves are really important trees that can survive underwater and in very salty water also. That’s really hard for a plant to do! They can do it because they have snorkels! Yes, snorkel roots that bring oxygen to the tree. Mangroves create an ecosystem that helps baby fish survive without being eaten by bigger fish that can’t fit into the little streams of the mangrove ecosystem. Mangroves also protect humans from big waves and strong winds by blocking the dangerous weather from the oceans. The mud in a mangrove ecosystem can also filter all of the pollution and chemicals from the water before it returns back out to sea on the tide.

KZ: You have also shared storytelling at Sydney Olympic Park events, but how would you explain the importance of storytelling to a K-Zoner who doesn’t know about it?

S: Story telling is a really fun and effective way to learn all about your natural surroundings including the rules to follow to stay safe and look after the land around you. Our stories can tell you about how animals, plants or even rocks and waterways were created as well as what the people who came before us, our Ancestors, were doing.

KZ: The Wangal people have lived off the land at Sydney Olympic Park for thousands and thousands of years. How did the Wangal people use natural resources from the local environment?

S: There are so many ways in which the Wangal would use resources from the wetlands. Fishing from canoes would be the most common activity in the mangroves and you can catch eels and fish like snapper, bream and mullet. Mangrove seeds are an important medicine to stop you from being shaky and the wood from mangroves makes excellent tools like boomerangs, we still have some of the mangrove boomerangs made by my family!

KZ: What can K-Zoners do to help the land and waters around them?

S: Our environment is having a really hard time with pollution. The best thing you can do is look after your rubbish, make sure it doesn’t blow away or get left behind. The worst pollution we have in Sydney Olympic Park is single use plastic drink bottles so making sure you always have a refillable drink bottle will keep you from needing to buy a drink while you’re out and will stop one more bottle from being produced.

  • Holiday Wrap Up

    by Aideen | Jul 25, 2018

Hi K-Zoners! Now that the holidays are over, I want to know about all the awesome activities you did over the break! Did you see a new movie, go anywhere exciting, read a rad book, create anything interesting or play a great game? Let me know in the comments below!

I've been busy making the incred new issue of K-Zone the past few weeks, but I’ve still been having a lot of fun! I’ve read a lot of epic books and comics, I went to the Sydney premiere of Ant-Man and The Wasp (shout out in the comments if you’ve seen it), and I even met some friendly alpacas! Let’s not even talk about all the videogames I’ve played though – the list is out of control.

I also recently watched Sherlock Gnomes on DVD - it’s all about Gnomeo and Juliet asking Sherlock Gnomes to investigate the disappearance of their garden gnome fam from a London backyard.

I think I’m a bit of a detective, and I was so inspired by the hilare movie, I ended up doing an escape room the other week just to prove I have the brain of a super sleuth!

I also went to Luna Park and bumped into the stars of the movie, as well as a rad K-Zoner called Dylan! We made sure the gnomes had plenty of awesome reading material before we left the park.

When I wasn’t losing sleep over the World Cup, I‘ve been playing Nick Football Champions on my phone a lot too – no seriously, a lot. It’s a free app that lets you team up with epic 8-bit pixel style Nickelodeon characters, and score goals in a fast football game. I’ve been dodging defenders and competing in matches non-stop!

You can earn keys to unlock new characters and worlds like Bikini Bottom from SpongeBob SquarePants and a new version of Manhattan from the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. There’s also a free sticker pack when you download the game. If you’re playing too, who is your favourite character? I like Patrick, Donatello, Aang, Korra, Arnold, Zim and Gir! If you aren’t already playing and want to try, check with a parent before you download it because there are in-app purchases.

There was one other thing that happened recently, but it was kind of crazy and hard to explain…

Let me know all about your holidays in the comments! I can’t wait to hear what you’ve been up to!

  • Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation Interview

    by Aideen | Jul 10, 2018

Hey K-Zoners! How are your holidays going? Let me know what you’ve been up to so far in the comments below!

Since there are so many long days to fill with awesome activities, I thought I’d mention a fun movie you could check out – Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation! It's in cinemas now, and it’s basically one big guide to having a… monster vacation!

Even if you’ve never been on a cruise ship, and you’re not a mythical creature, the movie is full of LOLS. K-Zone recently caught up with Andy Samberg, who plays Johnny in Hotel Transylvania, to talk about the new flick!

KZ: This movie is a summer vacation story. What’s been your most unique adventure with your own family?

A: We would go visit family in Florida or Manhattan and it would always be like 150 degrees and everyone was miserable… I don’t have any funny stories!

KZ: Did you ever take a cruise?

    A: No. Never.

Q: Does this movie make the idea of a cruise more or less interesting for you?

A: I feel like the movie makes it more enticing than it would personally be for me! I get seasick!

KZ: This is the third Hotel Transylvania movie – what’s different this time?

A: The setting! Hopefully the key elements of the first two movies are still intact in this one, though. The first two certainly struck a chord and people seemed to enjoy it, so the goal is to deliver on that promise once again.

KZ: How would you describe the relationship between Johnny and Drac?

A: They’re more comfortable with each other now that he’s married to his daughter. Whether it’s begrudgingly or not – Johnny is part of the family. They’re definitely more of a shorthand and Drac has accepted that there’s a human in the family.

KZ: Would you like to be more like your character Johnny IRL?

    A: Umm, no!

KZ: Do you see any resemblance between you and Johnny?

A: I would say that if you look at Johnny, it’s pretty clear that we’re very similar. Body type is super thin, hair is red, smile, dead eyes, long neck, same flip-flops, same attitude… He’s a good-time kinda guy!

KZ: How much of your own personality are you able to bring to the character?

A: Very little of my actual personality but from a creative perspective, I will add a few lines.

KZ: Do you prefer voicing an animated character to acting in front of the camera?

A: It’s freeing in a way because you don’t care about what you look like and you‘re also not worried that you‘re going to be judged on the acting as much, because audiences are going to be looking at a different person when they watch the movie. When the director asks you to push it further and take it bigger, it’s a safer environment to do that.

KZ: What do you enjoy the most about making the Hotel Transylvania movies?

A: I think our director Genndy Tartakovsky does such a great job in terms of the visuals. They’re always so much more dynamic than I’m expecting; the camera movements and the way that it’s plotted out, and the animation is so beautiful. Then you combine that with good storytelling and jokes that are actually funny for adults and kids.

KZ: Hotel Transylvania 3 was released on Friday 13 in the United States. How superstitious are you?

    A: I won’t walk under a ladder – I know it’s dumb, but I still won‘t do it!

  • Justice League: A Call For Heroes

    by Aideen | Jun 29, 2018
Hey K-Zoners! I'm sure you'll all agree when I say that superheroes are awesome, so imagine my excitement when I was given the opportunity to check out the new Justice League: A Call For Heroes exhibit at Madame Tussauds Sydney before it officially opened!

The epic experience unites DC superheroes, including the first moving wax figure in Australia, and transports guests to Gotham City on an interactive mission to save the world.

I raced over to Darling Harbour, but I realised I really needed to work on my speediness. Luckily, the first DC hero you meet as you enter Gotham City is The Flash – Barry Allen happens to be one of my favourite comic characters, so I was stoked to meet him. He needed my help! I had to to run alongside him and once I hit top speed, lightning crackled around us and lit up along his suit!

Next up was Wonder Woman! She needed me to join her in a gauntlet blast to destroy LexCorp's technology, which was causing chaos in the city.

I even managed to help Superman lift a helicopter as onlookers cheered us on! I'm super strong, so I was happy to help Clark out of a jam.

Finally, I spotted a figure in the shadows – it was K-Zone Team member, Ange! Oh, and Batman was there too... He didn't say much, just kept introducing himself? It was cool to hang out with the Caped Crusader though!

Want to become a hero too? Justice League: A Call For Heroes opens June 30 at Madame Tussauds Sydney!

  • It's Time To Train To Be A Jedi

    by Aideen | Jun 28, 2018

Ever wanted to train to be a Jedi? Be honest Padawan, of course you have! We recently got to play Star Wars: Jedi Challenges at K-Zone HQ, and we were all very excited to duel with lightsabers in augmented reality.

I loved the experience so much, I wanted to shout out to the Blog of Awesome crew and make sure you know that two K-Zoners actually have a chance to win a Star Wars: Jedi Challenges pack, including the Skywalker lightsaber controller, Lenovo Mirage AR headset and tracking beacon. If you want to enter, grab the July issue of K-Zone – it’s on sale until July 15!

I also got to chat to Tim Grattidge, the Consumer Category Manager at Lenovo Australia, about making Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, and AR vs VR tech!

KZ: As Consumer Category Manager at Lenovo Australia, can you describe an average day at work?

T: On an average day I get to sample, test and play with all the cool new technology Lenovo is introducing to Australia, including VR/AR products and smart home devices.

KZ: How often do you get to play games like Star Wars: Jedi Challenges at work?

T: Before new products are launched, I get early samples to test during work hours, which is a pretty cool and exciting part of the job at Lenovo.

KZ: So cool! You are in charge of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) Lenovo products – can you explain AR and VR, and the difference between the two?

T: Augmented reality is an experience that overlays digital information on top of the real world environment that you see. AR is all about enhancing the real world. On the other hand, virtual reality replaces your whole worldwide view with a fully simulated one. Virtual reality really takes you somewhere else.

KZ: What is your favourite Star Wars movie?

T: My favourite Star Wars movie has to be the original Star Wars IV: A New Hope. It’s amazing what they achieved without the technology that we have today.

KZ: OK Tim, it’s time for the biggest question. Are you a fan of the light side, or the dark side?

T: I prefer the Jedi. I guess being an Aussie, I barrack for the underdog.

Want to see behind the scenes pics of the K-Zone Team in lightsaber duels, or more info on Star Wars: Jedi Challenges? Check out the August issue of K-Zone, on sale July 16!

  • Knight Squad Goals

    by Aideen | May 18, 2018

Grab your swords and shields and get ready to defend the couch, coz Knight Squad is premiering Monday May 21 on Nickelodeon. Check out the trailer below!

In Astoria, young students train to become warriors at Knight School! If I wasn’t already a master in martial arts, swordsmanship and acrobatics, I’d already be in line to enrol.

Back row, left to right: Sir Gareth, Warwick, Buttercup, Prudence, Lilimar
Front row, left to right: Fizzwick, Arc and Ciara

I also recently got to chat with Seth Carr, who plays the troublemaker Fizzwick on the show!

KZ: What is the best thing about being Fizzwick?

S: He’s not a Knight so he can just run around at Knight School and talk to Sir Gareth. He’s unique in different ways, and he thinks he knows everything.

KZ: What should K-Zoners keep an eye out for in Knight Squad?

S: There’s a really big conclusion at the end of the season, so keep an eye out for the finale!

KZ: I hear you like comics, is that true?

S: My dad and I are Marvel nerds. I’m more into the movies than the comics, I think. Before Black Panther, my fave Marvel movie was The Avengers.

KZ: If you could be a superhero, who would it be?

S: I would choose Batman, because he has gadgets. Technically he’s not a superhero because he doesn’t have superpowers, but he’s rich. He has a bunch of gadgets like cool cars. My favourite gadget is the Batmobile. It’s pretty awesome.

Any Thor: Ragnarok fans out there? How great is the new movie! The adventure is almost as epic as the time Thor was turned into a frog.

Okay, bear with me K-Zoners, I’m not crazy – that really happened in the comics, and it’s one of my favourite Thor storylines.

From Thor #364 to #366, Thor was trapped in the body of a frog, and joins a battle between rats and frogs in New York City. There’s even a sneaky reference to Loki turning Thor into a frog in Thor: Ragnarok, did you catch it?

The Frog Thor story is epic, and the war between rats and frogs is just as intense as a war between gods in Asgard. At the end, Thor was restored to human form, but one of the other frogs that witnessed his heroism took over his role. Called Throg, he is actually a human (Simon Walterson) who was turned into a frog by a curse. Throg found a sliver of Mjolnir, and was given a fraction of Thor’s power. The mighty Frog of Thunder wields Frogjolnir and helps protect Earth!

Basically, frogs are awesome and who knows how many are hopping around with suh-weet superpowers?

If you want to help save frog species in Australia, the Australian Museum’s FrogID project is currently trying to complete Australia’s first national frog count. Each frog species makes a unique sound, and by recording and uploading their calls using the free FrogID app, the team can identify different species, along with the time and location using GPS technology, to figure out where frogs live around the country. This will help to discover where frogs are at risk and how to conserve them!

With the free app, the power to save Australia’s frogs is in the palm of your hand, whether you’re in the garden, at school or out on a trip with the fam. You could even discover a new frog species – or a Frog of Thunder! Make sure to check with a parent or guardian before downloading the FrogID app, and get their permission before you go frog hunting!

Have you checked out the latest issue of K-Zone yet? It’s a Superhero Showdown, and (human) Thor is the awesome cover star! It's only on sale until Sunday!

  • Meet The Cast Of DuckTales

    by Aideen | Nov 22, 2017

OK K-Zoners, by now you should know I'm a major fan of DuckTales, so imagine how jealous I was to see that Joel from Hanging With and Radio Disney got to meet the cast! I’ve got the exclusive video for you to check out, and if you’ve always wondered what the DuckTales theme song sounds like with a bad Aussie accent, you’re in luck.

I also wanted to share my top five fun facts about Ducktales with you – if you know any other cool trivia or Easter eggs, share them in the comments below!

    1. Scrooge McDuck’s money vault is apparently three cubic acres! The measurement doesn’t really make much sense, but one thing’s for sure – that’s a lot of money!

    2. Huey, Dewey and Louie are triplets, but they still have personalities inspired by the order they were born. Huey is the oldest, so he tends to be the most responsible, while Dewey is the middle triplet and really wants to stand out. Louie is the youngest, and often thinks he can get away with more – which usually lands him in a lot of trouble. According to the show producer, Matt Youngberg, “Huey has Scrooge’s brains, Dewey has Scrooge’s guts, and Louie has Scrooge’s love of treasure”!

    3. David Tennant is the first Scottish actor to play the iconic Scotsman (or is it Scotsduck?), Scrooge McDuck!

    4. George Lucas, who wrote Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Steven Spielberg, who directed the movie, have both admitted that the gang’s adventures in the original DuckTales influenced the first ever Indiana Jones movie!

    5. Whovians will recognise David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who, which makes this short video with Scrooge’s time traveling grandfather clock even funnier!

Catch DuckTales Saturday mornings at 9am on Disney XD!

  • Meet Ninja Warrior Jack Wilson

    by Aideen | Nov 22, 2017

The first ever Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards aired on Monday, November 20 at 5:30pm! Nickelodeon announced the winners, but I won't be spoiling the results because if you missed the show, you can watch it for free on the Nick Play app right now. Just make sure you check it's okay before downloading the app!

I was also lucky enough to go to a slime-filled celebration at Nickelodeon HQ and catch up with a few of the totally talented nominees – I made sure to ask all the hard questions and get all the deets, so you know more about the sports stars you can vote for.

Australian Ninja Warrior star, Jack Wilson, was nominated in the Sickest Moves category, and also co-hosted the show!

Here I am hanging out in a ball pit with Jack Wilson!

    Fast Facts

    Nickname: Jank, Janky, Willo

    Amazing Achievements: Australian Ninja Warrior

KZ: Hi Jack! How many times a week do you train?

J: At least two hours a day, whether it’s pushups or pull ups, and I always run every day, about half an hour of running or walking, then strength training as well. I’ll run outside, get out in nature and enjoy what this universe has to offer, so I love running on the beach as well. I love running over 10km but I usually run 5-10km.

KZ: The best part of being a Ninja Warrior is…

J: I was the very first Australian to complete the heats, first person up the wall to hit the buzzer, and a lot of people watched it. I really made my mark for my outfit, and I went on with a strong message and inspired a lot of people, kids, teenagers and adults. I got so much love and support from all ages, not just for the physical side but also for who I am and the message I was trying to send. That was important to me. The Ninja Warrior helped me go out, be myself and speak out.

KZ: Any  advice for K-Zoners who want to share an important message but don’t know where to start?

J: Speak to someone, whatever ideas you have. Communicating is so important, so speak up. If you have good ideas, tell people! You never know where that idea can lead. I started with a vision, I thought it was impossible but I’m living it now.

  • Meet BMX Superstar Caroline Buchanan

    by Aideen | Nov 17, 2017

Hey K-Zoners! Let me ask you an important question – what could possibly be more awesome than sport? Well, the first ever Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards, of course!

Nickelodeon have announced superstar nominees for this epic award show, including Tim Cahill, Ellyse Perry, Jamie-Lee Price, Daniel Ricciardo, Charlotte Caslick, Jack Wilson, Caroline Buchanan and many more. Check out the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards on Monday, November 20 at 5:30pm!

I was lucky enough to go to a slime-filled celebration at Nickelodeon HQ and catch up with a few of the totally talented nominees – I made sure to ask all the hard questions and get all the deets, so you know more about the sports stars you can vote for.

Check out my interview with BMX superstar Caroline Buchanan, who is nominated in the Sickest Moves category, below!

Here I am hanging out in a ball pit with Caroline Buchanan!

    Fast Facts

    Name: Caroline Buchanan

    Nickname: Caz

Amazing Achievements: Holds eight World Championship BMX and Mountain Biking titles, and has represented Australia twice at the Olympic Games!

    Loves: French bulldogs!

KZ: Hey Caroline! What has been the weirdest thing that’s happened to you since becoming a champion?

C: I’ve had a lot of really scary moments. Earlier this year I jumped the Nitro Circus Mega Ramp and dropping into that ramp, I was shaking and thought I was going to be sick, but to overcome those fears was pretty crazy, and you surprise yourself with your own ability.

KZ: How important is physical training for your events?

C: Huge! I started racing when I was five, and training specifically for BMX when I was 10. When I was 15 and joined the professional category, it all ramped up and became my job, so I dedicated time to it. Training and strength conditioning isn’t just important for getting onto the podium, but also since I am involved in an extreme action sport where there are a lot of injuries, you want to remain strong so you can have those crashes but you can get up and keep racing.

KZ: When you train, what are you doing?

C: For BMX biking or cycling events, it’s a lot of leg strength and power, but also upper body and core. The whole body is used for riding a bike, but also for injury prevention, when you come off the bike and have a crash, I’m able to recover faster by working on my full body.

KZ: If you could be a champion of any other sport, what would you choose?

C: I love the Winter Olympics, maybe because there are more action/adventure sports in it, I was definitely inspired by Torah Bright in 2010, it was like the realisation for me that I could be an Olympic champion one day. If I could do another Olympic sport I’d do boardercross in snowboarding, it’s very similar to the world title event that I’ve done in mountain biking called four-cross. Both have four athletes, moguls, corners, head to head racing, but it’s on a snowboard. So if I could snowboard, that would be for me.

KZ: What has been the highlight of your career?

C: I recently won my eighth world title, so I would consider that a highlight. Competing in two Olympic Games, I haven’t won a medal but recently in Rio, after I crashed in the semi-final, I went up into the stands because I wanted to support my fellow Australian athletes, and I actually got a standing ovation from the crowd – all these foreign people that I didn’t know. I think that moment, coming in as the world champion, not winning a medal at the Games and not being able to compete in the final, because I crashed, but getting that respect from the crowd, that was my Olympic moment.

KZ: When you aren’t on two wheels, what are you doing? Do you have any hobbies?

C: I love French bulldogs. My parents have two French bulldogs, Diesel and Bree, in Canberra, and I have one called Cosmo. I’ve travelled ever since I was nine while racing BMX, so from state to national to world championship level, and now the last two Olympic Games. I am based out of Southern California a lot of the time, so Cosmo is over in America, and I have a BMX track in my backyard.

  • Spooks, Scares and Shows

    by Aideen | Oct 30, 2017

Hey K-Zoners! If you’re interested in seeing some seriously spooky specials, you’re in luck! Netflix has hilare Halloween themed shows that you can check out anytime, so I put in the hard work for you, grabbed some snacks, jumped on the couch and figured out the top three to watch.

Pokémon: Indigo League – ‘The Tower of Terror’ from Season 1

On their way to Lavender Town, Ash and the crew find the woods are getting foggy as they approach Pokémon Tower. After being too afraid to enter, the group eventually heads inside, but Brock and Misty leave after being scared by tricky Ghost Pokémon. Ash and his Pokémon explore alone, but find a Haunter and Gengar who are trying to be funny. Things get spooky after Ash doesn’t find the pair very amusing… Dressing up as one of the Ghost Pokémon would be such a sneaky Halloween costume idea!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – ‘Zedd’s Monster Mash’ from Season 2

As the Power Rangers enjoy Halloween fun with their friends, Lord Zedd tells his henchmen to crash the Youth Center Halloween Party, disguised as kids. When Tommy takes the disguises baddies trick-or-treating, Goldar kidnaps him and places him in a Haunted Forest! Tommy has to try and battle the most dangerous Halloween monster revived by Doomstone. I hope someone out there is dressing up as one of the hilarious characters in this episode. Stick a pumpkin on your head and you’re ready to go!

Goosebumps Specials – ‘The Haunted Mask’ Part 1 and 2

Carly Beth falls for every prank played on her, so when she is tricked into eating a gross sandwich by her friends, she’s had enough. She buys the scariest mask at an old costume store, and plans to wear it for Halloween. However, things take a massive turn when she discovers she can’t take the mask off!

  • Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards Voting Is Open

    by Aideen | Oct 20, 2017

Hey K-Zoners! Let me ask you an important question – what could possibly be more awesome than sport? Well, the first ever Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards, of course!

Nickelodeon have announced superstar nominees for this epic award show, including Tim Cahill, Ellyse Perry, Jamie-Lee Price, Daniel Ricciardo, Charlotte Caslick, Jack Wilson, Caroline Buchanan and many more. Voting is open now at, and the power is in your hands. You can also enter the draw to win the ultimate Nickelodeon sports swag pack!

I was lucky enough to go to a slime-filled celebration at Nickelodeon HQ and catch up with a few of the totally talented nominees – I made sure to ask all the hard questions and get all the deets, so you know more about the sports stars you can vote for.

The first person I'll tell you about is the totally awesome Jamie-Lee Price, who is nominated in the Next Big Thing category!

Here I am hanging out in a ball pit with Jamie-Lee Price!

    Fast Facts

    Name: Jamie-Lee Price

    Team: Giants

    Position: Wing Defence and Centre

    Goal Assists: 17

    Centre Pass Receives: 44

    Deflections: 36

    Intercepts: 18

Loves: The beach, spending time with family and having fun!

A: Hey Jamie-Lee! What has been the craziest moment of your netball career so far?

J: This year I made the Under 21 Australian team, and we went to Botswana for the World Cup. We played in Africa, which was cool. I got Most Valuable Player, which was also very exciting; I’d never gotten that before. I stayed for an extra four days and went to Zimbabwe. We went walking with the lions, and saw giraffes, rhinos and hippos. Everything you see in The Lion King, we saw it!

A: Do you have any traditions before a game?

J: I always wear the same pair of socks! They change every year but I’ll wear those socks for every game. That’s weekly though, so I do wash them!

A: You must spend so much time around other people being part of a team! Does anyone ever pull any pranks?

J: One time, in one team, one of the girls hid in the hotel rooms while wearing a Spider-Man mask, and she put a camera in the room. When someone else would walk in, she jumped out and screamed and scared them. We got it all on camera.

A: So cool! You’re obviously awesome at netball – what other sports do you think are helpful for being better in netball?

J: In a way, I think AFL is quite similar in a lot of ways to netball, and when I was younger I played OzTag in summer to keep me fit, and it’s a good base for netball.

A: Any tips for K-Zoners who want to be a pro player?

J: Believe in yourself! Talent can only get you so far but hard work can get you further, so the more hard work you put in and the more belief you have, you can get anywhere.

Want to vote for Jamie-Lee in the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards? Head to! Voting closes at midnight on Sunday, November 12!

  • DuckTales Is Back

    by Aideen | Oct 11, 2017

Life is like a hurricane, here in Duckburg! Race cars, lasers, aeroplanes – it’s a duck blur!

OK K-Zoners, do you know what I’m on about, or are you wondering what on earth is happening? Well, those are the lyrics for one of the best cartoon theme songs ever – the DuckTales theme song!

Disney Channel has made a new version of the classic DuckTales cartoon, featuring Scrooge McDuck with Huey, Dewey and Louie (Donald Duck’s nephews), Webby Vanderquack, Mrs. Beakley and Launchpad McQuack. The series will premiere on Saturday October 21 at 9am, which means you have plenty of time to learn all the words to the theme song! The show is about the adventures of Scrooge and his family and friends – see a bit of Scrooge in action in the clip below!

I was also lucky enough to receive a special present from Disney Channel to celebrate the new series; a top hat full of coins (and delicious cookies). So I did what any normal person would do... I threw the coins everywhere! I just wish I had enough gold coins to swim in, just like Scrooge McDuck can do with all his riches.

If you don’t believe me when I say the theme song is great, check out the video below to see how much the stars of Disney Channel love singing it too.

Are you excited for DuckTales? Would you want to swim through a pool of money? Let me know in the comments below!

  • Bumblebee Visits K-Zone HQ

    by | Sep 20, 2017

    Credit: Cams Wedding Muscle Cars

Hey K-Zoners! This morning we had an exciting visitor at K-Zone HQ – Bumblebee the Transformer came by to say hello!

The famous yellow Autobot was disguised as a 2013 Chevy Camaro 2SS, but the K-Zone Team knew who it was and we were all happy to see Bumblebee.

Shhh! Don’t tell anyone, but there’s an Autobot in our midst.

Here I am reacting to the incred specs of the Chevy Camaro! This rad ride has an LS3 V8 6.2L engine with 550 horsepower, 2.5 inch twin stainless steel exhaust, a Borla ATAK muffler system, Summit air intake system and an ECU Chip upgrade.

Check out the video below to see how excited I was to be sitting in such an amazing car!

The K-Zone team also got to jump into the car and go for an intense drive around the city. We loved every minute of it! We also discovered that when Bumblebee isn’t saving the world, he’s busy hanging out at Cams Wedding Muscle Cars. It was a great day for Transformer fans at K-Zone, and as an Autobot supporter I’m so glad I can say I’m mates with Bumblebee!

Who's your favourite Autobot or Decepticon? Let me know in the comments below!
